In Schleiermacher’s formulation, inside and outside, self and world, spirit and map, are intricately attuned to one another. To gaze at the self in an act of religious introspection is simultaneously to glimpse the enormity of the cosmos, the vastness of the world. Conversely, to understand the vastness of the world is at one and the same time to know the intimate nooks and crannies of the human spirit.
