In the fall of 2018 and into early 2019, I worked with a team of UX Designers to solve a simple problem. How does a company translate hundreds of thousands of data points into meaningful and actionable knowledge? My primary responsibility on this project was research, synthesis, ideation, and sketching.

What is OSBeehives?

OSBeehives is on a mission to technify the beekeeping industry by building a global network of beekeepers and identifying causes and solutions for colony health deterioration. This mission is founded on the principles of citizen science, open data, and collaboration between beekeepers.

Research Summary

After weeks of research, we decided to focus efforts on bringing beekeepers closer to their bees by integrating enterprise software solutions with the flexibility of a mobile platform that cuts through the noise, translates data into actionable prompts, and aids beekeepers in decision making.

Primary Deliverables

My team and I worked to create a user-centered solution for our research question:

With thousands of hives to maintain how can commercial apiarists utilize technology to save bees?

Our deliverables, presented in the Google Slideshow below, were threefold:

  1. Create a new inspection form for commercial beekeepers
  2. Develop a dashboard that synthesizes thousands of data point
  3. Focus on an enterprise-level software solution that integrates with mobile

Persona Creation

OSBeehives Personas

Markus: The Traditionalist

After six interviews conducted throughout the world and one contextual inquiry, we found that "Markus" was the most common type of commercial beekeeper. He's older, hesitant to utilize technology, and suspicious of anything that goes against the traditions passed down by his family. He's also tired and looking for ways to simplify his business. He needs reassurance that technology won't get between him and his bees. Great news, Markus, it won't! In fact, OSBeehives'100-Hive Dashboard brings you closer.

Andy: The Poweruser

Our second persona was a little different. Andy was a one-time finance guru who decided to throw his computer in the trash and get outside. He feels good about "saving the bees," but also wants to utilize technology to analyze his apiary's performance overtime. Great news, Andy, with OSBeehives' enterprise level software, you can now analyze any kind of metric you would like!
